Interviews - News - Analysis: For successful growth with Managed Security Services

Managed security services help to deploy sales staff sensibly

"There have also been cases of ransomware among existing customers who are not yet at the level of protection that we recommend today. And there was a relatively well-known case in Kaiserslautern, which was also reported in the press, and they also deal with the issue relatively openly. We held an event in our 2nd division stadium with other IT-related companies from the region on the topic of IT security. And the company gave a specialist presentation along the lines of: "We were affected, how did we get out of the mess and how do we protect ourselves today?"

A paradigm shift in IT security strategy

Manuel Neubecker describes the change from a reactive to a proactive IT security strategy as one of the key success factors. In the past, a lot of time was spent presenting customers with the same offer every year. Today, the focus is on continuously offering optimal protection and using sales resources more efficiently. This change reflects the growing need for integrated solutions that include not just products, but comprehensive security packages.

The portfolio of a modern IT service provider

A typical portfolio includes server, storage and network systems, workplace solutions, software such as Microsoft 365, cloud services and telephony. Neubecker’s company offers a wide range of security services in particular, including firewall systems, endpoint virus protection, behavior-based systems and hard disk encryption. There is a noticeable reluctance in the area of data protection consulting, which shows that specialized security services should often be provided in cooperation with specialized data protection experts.

The term “basic protection”

It is interesting to note the choice of the term “basic protection” instead of “managed” to ensure better understanding among customers. This decision reflects the trend towards making IT services more understandable and accessible. The term is constantly being adapted to meet current security requirements.

Challenges and incidents

Manuel reports cases of ransomware at existing customers who were not yet at the recommended level of protection. A well-known example from Kaiserslautern shows that even established companies are not immune to cyber attacks. Such incidents highlight the need for managed security services that go beyond simple virus protection and firewalls. Smaller companies without their own IT department in particular benefit from the expertise of external service providers who offer round-the-clock protection.

Future prospects and further development

The next twelve months are crucial for the further development of Managed Security Services. Manuel’s company plans to further automate existing processes and thus increase efficiency. This applies not only to technical and service issues, but also to the billing of managed services. Automation and integration of solutions should minimize manual processes and potential sources of error.

'Above all, managed services have ensured that we spend much less time asking customers the same question every year: Can we give you a quote for what you already have? And we wanted to get away from that and use our sales resources where they make more sense.'

Olaf Kaiser:

What do you think are the positive success factors for where you are today?

Manuel Neubecker:

Once we decided to pursue this route, the main benefit was that we spent significantly less time asking customers the same question every year: "Can we make you an offer for what you already have? Are you still protected?" We wanted to move away from this routine and redirect our sales resources to more strategic areas. This shift allowed us to eliminate this repetitive process and focus on meeting customer expectations with comprehensive solutions rather than merely selling products.

Olaf Kaiser:

How is the current portfolio structured?

Manuel Neubecker:

Our offerings include classic IT components such as servers, storage systems, network equipment, workstation systems, software, Microsoft 365, and cloud telephony. As a company, we position ourselves as architects of IT solutions, providing either targeted support in specific areas or comprehensive 360-degree service to our clients.

In the realm of security services, we offer a range of solutions including firewall systems, endpoint protection, antivirus and behavior-based security, hard disk encryption, and email security. However, we maintain a low profile regarding data protection consulting, as we do not have data protection officers on staff.

Olaf Kaiser:

Many MSPs on the market offer a Managed Server and a Managed Client. You have already built the security aspect into the name Basic Protection Server and Basic Protection Client. Did you have this name Basic Protection for the Managed packages right from the start?

Manuel Neubecker:

The idea was to use a term that is as German as possible, rather than the broadly interpreted 'managed' term. We have adjusted our understanding of what constitutes basic protection several times. While we still offer our managed products, we are currently revising our approach as IT is continually evolving.

Olaf Kaiser:

What is the situation with known security incidents in your region?

Manuel Neubecker:

There have also been cases of ransomware among existing customers who are not yet at the level of protection that we recommend today. And there was a relatively well-known case in Kaiserslautern, which was also reported in the press, and they are also relatively open about the issue. Irrespective of the reporting obligation, the company also spoke openly about this at an event we held a few weeks ago. We held an event in our 2nd division stadium with other IT-related companies from the region on the topic of IT security. And the company gave a specialist presentation along the lines of: We were affected, how did we get out of the mess and how do we protect ourselves today?

Olaf Kaiser:

How could this incident have occurred at this company, if there is any public information about it?

Manuel Neubecker:

In principle, a simpler level of protection was previously used. If you look at virus protection or firewall systems, traditional small and medium-sized companies often do not have an IT department that takes care of them 24/7 and also acts to detect resourceful attackers. This simply requires other solutions, other managed services. And that was also the approach taken by the customer after the issues had been resolved.

Olaf Kaiser:

Looking ahead to the next 12 months, what are the most important points you would like to address for your further development in the area of Managed Security Services?

Manuel Neubecker:

Ultimately, there is a lot to do to further develop the topics that we started early on. Namely, to keep checking to what extent we can automate regular activities. And that doesn't just refer to technical or service issues, but also to the billing of managed services, because there are often manual processes due to the system. There are more elegant solutions than Excel files, also because every interim solution is a source of error.
