Standardization for security success:
Managed security services are considered a field of the future for IT service providers—but how can they be successfully established in a clearly defined target group? Gerd Rehders, Head of Sales at Atelios GmbH, specializes in the VW brand environment and shows how focus, standardization, and smart rollout strategies can increase both efficiency and security.
From the data center to the edge box
Atelios started in 2011 with data center services and connecting car dealerships to Volkswagen’s factory systems. Its core products were its own VPN access and the “smart server” in the car dealership. In 2017, Gerd Rehders added the security division – as a managed service from the start. The first solution: firewalls, centrally administered and monitored. “We operate, monitor, and support everything from Hanover. This allows us to remain efficient and handle large rollouts even with a small team.”
One-to-many instead of individual customization
The key: a high degree of standardization. 90% of the firewall configuration is identical for all customers. Adjustments are made centrally using templates – for example, if an EC cash terminal conflicts with a security solution. “A customer reports a problem, we adjust the template – and a few minutes later, everyone benefits.”
Compliance as a tailwind
One advantage in the automotive industry is clear guidelines such as the VW operating concept. This defines the IT structure, security measures, and network architecture. This facilitates implementation because all parties involved have a common standard. In addition, providers such as Atelius meet the demanding T-SACs certification – a clear trust factor for customers.
Market expansion: Switzerland as an example
Atelios recently expanded into Switzerland. Car dealerships there are now at a similar point to those in Germany in 2017 – central internet connection, increasing bandwidth requirements, and growing security pressure. The rollout follows the same pattern as in Germany, adapted to local conditions.
MDR & future prospects
While 24/7 operation is not currently planned, Rehders is observing growing demand for Managed Detection and Response (MDR), driven by increasing cyber insurance requirements. Atelios intends to continue deepening its security offerings in the future instead of spreading itself too thin: “It’s about offering services that we can manage centrally.”
Key statements from Gerd Rehders
“Standardization makes managed services scalable – less than ten percent of our services are customized for individual customers.”
“We operate, monitor, and support our services centrally – that is the focus of our business model.”
“Industry specialization is the key: if you have ten customers in a niche, it’s easier to win the eleventh.”
